Coq, c.1942

Pencil and Indian ink on pearly Japanese paper, signed and stamped lower right
25 x 18 cm

History
Jouve has often worked on this theme, particularly since 1900 and a model of a large rooster sculpture with spread wings that he had made for the Exposition Universelle. Various rooster studies were also carried out for the cover of the literary and artistic magazine Chanteclair to illustrate the cover of issue 308 in November 1935. This drawing, made around 1942, is one of the studies undertaken in anticipation of the illustration of Renard's novel (Maurice Genevoix's version, illustrations engraved by the Beltrand brothers) published in 1958, however this version was not retained for the book.
